It’s funny how a lot of people use the word “conservative” and love to throw it around. We are supposed to be pro guns, against gay marriage, oppose abortion, support increased military everywhere but against government spending, anti-illegal immigration, and a whole litany of other things. Defining a conservative suddenly becomes a very complex thing when it really should be simple. I’ve decided to define conservative in 2 short sentences that encompass a true conservative’s beliefs.
con·serv·a·tive /kənˈsərvətiv/: a person who is averse to increases in governmental power, influence, and regulation. This includes especially the federal level, but also the state and local levels.
See how simple that becomes?
The typical definition of conservative is someone that is adverse to change or holds onto traditional values. That might be partially true, but it gives the impression that true conservatives are against anything new. That is simply not the case. True conservatives are not against the government. We are simply against the further expansion of the government.
Now let’s analyze some of the typical conservative platform of beliefs. Unfortunately, that platform is still spearheaded by the GOP. Don’t get me wrong. I’d rather vote for a Republican any day of the week; however, the GOP has been hijacked by both moderates and extreme “neocons” just as the Democratic Party has been hijacked by Progressives.
The analysis that follows are my own beliefs. These are not all of my beliefs and there will be more to follow.
I’m going to start with the gun laws in the United States. That should be no surprise to my readers, right?
It is estimated that there are over 20,000 gun laws in the United States right now – including federal, state, and local. At best guess, there are 271 federal laws alone. You can immediately see why true conservatives are vehemently opposed to ANY additional gun regulations. Simply put, we have enough already to cover everything. I would argue that we have way to many gun laws – that anything beyond the 2nd Amendment is too many.
As a matter of fact, with recent Supreme Court rulings including Heller, McDonald, and Ezell, many of those laws and regulations are in the process of being trimmed down.
The 2nd Amendment is, by definition, a civil right. If you notice, it comes right behind the 1st Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms does not include just guns. It includes knives or any other weapons. Notice that I didn’t say “reasonable” since that is an arbitrary term subject to the whims of those that would try to define “reasonable arms”.
This is really a hot-button issue between so-called conservatives and progressives.
The US Constitution, in it’s opening statement, declares that one of the primary roles of government is to “…provide for the common defence..” Even further Article 1 Section 8 gives Congress the power to declare war, raise a navy, and a standing army, and a militia. Article 2 Section 2 gives the president the power as commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
So what is the problem? Basically since World War II, we have made ourselves the de facto policemen of the world. We have not been content enough with the containment policy for the Cold War. Our federal government has decided to expand it’s reaches into just about everywhere using the meme of “spreading democracy.”
Unfortunately, the real truth is that this has lead to a massive expansion of the military budget for worldwide affairs that in most cases does not directly protect the people of the United States. Should we be isolationist? Of course not, but we also don’t need to be the policemen of the world.
I will keep this one simple. It is NOT the role of the government to provide for the health of the people. That would be an individual responsibility.
See how much easier healthcare becomes?
I believe that abortion is tantamount to murder. The only possible exception would be the health of the mother IF the child’s life was already in danger.
The federal government needs to keep out of the abortion fray and so does the Supreme Court. As far as those who think it is the “right” of the mother to choose, then why not let mother’s choose to kill their 1 year old or 2 year old children? There is no difference. Don’t be a hypocrite or an idiot.
I also believe that people who sit in pews on Sunday supposedly as Christians, but also support abortion simply to follow party lines are the height of hypocrisy. As a direct example, I find it very amusing and ironic that many mainstream black churches support Obama and the Democratic Party in lock-step and thus support abortion. Somehow I don’t think Jesus Christ (black or white) would find that amusing.
Just because someone makes 100x more income that I make DOES NOT mean they should pay a higher percentage in taxes. That is a quasi-socialistic way of thinking.
Yes, I actually believe taxation with representation has a place. For example, I believe the government has a role in providing certain infrastructure such as highways. However, the problem is that like all things our government touches, the beast grows out of control. If you want some excellent reading on the national highway system, then I recommend reading this article. You immediately realize how our government grows out of control.
I firmly believe that we should all pay the same percentage of taxes. That is why a true conservative can’t support the current progressive tax system. I support either a flat tax rate or the fair tax system.
This is a perfect example of government gone haywire.
Look – I’m not anti-gay, but do I support gays marrying? Not really. I personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.
However, this is NOT a political issue. It is a social and religious issue. The federal government needs to stay out of the marriage business, and to be quite honest so do the state governments. In short, the whole gay marriage issue is a red herring.
Whether you call it the welfare state or the nanny state, this area is the single-most expanded part of government. Look – most conservatives are very compassionate people. However, we believe in self-responsibility. It’s not my job to be forced to feed and clothe you or feed you crawfish. See how stupid that is?
The problem is that the more you give the general population, the more the general population grows to depend on the giver. It’s a vicious cycle that is completely out of control. Want a simple example? Take a look at the people opposed to work-for-benefits requirements or drug-testing.
I will keep this one simple too. This country was founded by immigrants. We have plenty of land mass to support plenty of immigrants – as long as they come in LEGALLY.
When someone comes into this country and immediately violates our laws and continues with the intention of violating our laws, then that person cannot be trusted. Is it a pain in the rear to gain citizenship? Yep, but that is part of the process.
English – Primary Language
You want to speak Spanish in your home? No problem.
English, however, has been our primary language since Britain settled faster than the rest of Europe. Let’s keep it that way.
